ON MAIN Call for Artists – CAMERA/WHORE
Camera/whore is looking for visual, media, and performance artists to participate in a spectacular one night event July 14, 2012. Submission Deadline: June 21.
Camera/whore focuses on creating an open space for new media art involving interactive installations. Inspired by the rise in personal and professional photography and digital recording on and offline, Camera/whore borders between real and mediated time and space. Camera/whore provides a participatory service/space, an open form/forum activated by the viewers/viewed blurring the boundaries between artist/audience, voyeur/exhibitionist, spectator/spectacle, and consumer/consumed.
Camera/whore’s name is appropriated from net culture. Popularized by the home webcam, “Camera whore” or “cam whore”, is an internet slang developed by the rapid trend of digital representations. The slash (/) is inserted to draw attention to the separation of both the camera and the participant while simultaneously causing internet search engines to separate the terms as different items.
Today, with shared and collective appropriation of digital photography facilitated by electronic communications the role of the photo booth has radically changed. With technology we have access to create our own digital identities. Digital imaging has become important to our social interactions: we construct ourselves through off/online representations. We seek to see and be seen. What/who is being exploited?
We are looking for artists to submit concepts that engage performative spaces recording the audience (photobooths): new media, photography, video, installation and net-art that create interactions between audience and media. All content produced at the exhibition will be premiered on Social Media platforms. Selected artists will receive an artist fee. Please fill out the submission form by June 21, 2012 on www.camerawhore.me.
